That is one long-as-hell name for a product. Try saying five times without getting tongue-tied. (You know you totally just tried it.)
This is my absolute favorite product of the summer! It is also the very first BB cream I try. My acne-prone skin tends to not react well to most products, making me extremely hesitant and very selective when incorporating new skincare products into my routine. Boy was I glad I got brave with this one and gave it a shot.
The basics – BB cream is short for beauty balm or blemish balm and it is one of the hottest products in the beauty industry. Why? Because it is AWESOME. You can find BB creams that:
- Are lightweight and offer effective, broad spectrum sun protection which is essential for fighting signs of aging. (In my case, avoiding the ripening banana look… not hot.)
- Offer some serious light reflecting ingredients such as mica for a luminous skin effect
- Double as a primer as a result of silicone-based ingredients making your foundation look flawless
- Moisturize your skin
This means that for some lucky individuals, the beauty routine can be streamlined and cut in half (or reduced to one product all-together!) if you find a BB cream that really works for you. I unfortunately, do not fall into this oh-so-lucky category because I need a product with acne-fighting ingredients under my moisturizer to prevent breakouts (check out my morning skin routine here). This is the only hangup about BB creams. The FDA does not allow acne-fighting ingredients and sunscreen to be combined into a single product. So I have swapped my Clinique Superdefense Daily Defense Moisturizer for the Urban Decay NAKED SKIN BRONZING BEAUTY BALM for the summer and wear it under my foundation as a primer. As the name suggests, it is a bronzer that immediately turns my pale, computer screen-tanned skin into a golden, summer island glow sans the freckles left behind by harmful UV rays. It is oil free (um, yay!) and offers protection from further sun damage as it has broad spectrum SPF 20. This is one of those things that sounds too good to be true (like fat-free ginormous French toast), but I promise, it is true!
In a brave attempt to wear minimal makeup this week and let my skin breathe (I’ve been wearing makeup every single day for the past three weeks), I have also swapped my foundation for this BB cream as I have found it has decent coverage for my freckles. I set it with a bit of translucent powder and add a little bronzer on the cheeks to avoid looking like death. This before and after pic was taken indoors, I promise the color looks more natural and less oompa loompa-ish outdoors. Indoor lighting can be so tricky.
Sweating like a pig while wearing a full face during MBFW Swim last weekend really did a number on my pores. My next challenge is to go a week without wearing ANY makeup (pause – gulp) and be able to post selfies on Instagram with the hashtag #iwokeuplikethis like queen Bey. That’s for the truly brave out there, or maybe for the few chosen ones with flawless complexions (lucky bishes, ugh!).
Stay fabulous! #OwnYourGlam
