I’ve had a nail polish obsession for as long as I can remember. I wanted to paint my nails since I could practically walk. I begged my mom throughout elementary school and finally, in fifth grade, she finally let me start painting my nails. I went completely crazy. I would change my nail polish about 5 times per week to match my outfits. I would draw designs on them with toothpicks, paint the same nail half one color and half another, and paint each nail a different color. The crazier and louder, the more I liked it. For me, it was (and still is) an expression of individuality, creativity and sense of personal style. Fortunately, nail art has evolved from a tacky practice, to a sleek, polished and cool thing these days.
Fun fact about nail polish: it can protect your nails from sun damage. That’s right! Nobody ever thinks about slathering sunblock on their nails when baking under the sun. If you’re like me, you wash your hands immediately after applying SPF to get rid of the greasy, slippery feeling (nobody likes a gross, smudged iPhone screen). Here’s the good news…nail polish, specifically the darker, more pigmented colors, provide “shade” for your nails. According to doctors, the damage caused by sun damage can cause vertical ridges in the nail that can take anywhere from three to six months to heal! Other commonly neglected areas are the scalp and ears. Interesting, right? Don’t forget to use SPF on your hands ladies! Me included.
