Fall is my favorite season. Not that we have seasons in Miami, but you get what I mean. I love breaking out my booties, cute knits, dark lipsticks and stockings. Nothing sexes up an outfit like the perfect pair of stockings (or tights, just don’t call them “pantyhose” puhleease). Lipstick on the other hand can do just that and complete opposite. A red lipstick, an absolutely flawless makeup (check out my YouTube tutorial here) and the right outfit can make you feel powerful, sexy, sophisticated, elegant and classy all at once. A red lip with a classic, clean, winged eyeliner can elevate your looks anywhere from china-doll status to pin-up Goddess. It is a shame that a lot of women are afraid of red lipstick! They say they look too different and they “feel” weird. The truth is, red lipstick is supposed to make you feel different. Think about it – red is the color of love, passion, danger, anger… Red lipstick is meant to make you feel different both when you look in the mirror and when people look at you. It is meant to make a statement: A bold one. It says, “Look at me, I have arrived”. Yes, it takes a certain level of confidence to rock red lipstick; a confidence that you develop as you start experimenting with different shades and you find the perfect one for your complexion. Red lipstick shades range from the very bright cherry pinks with blue undertones (like my favorite lipstick: Russian Red from MAC, in both pics), to the orangey-brick shades to the deep wines that have plums and black undertones. So do yourself a favor and go to your favorite makeup counter and play with some red lipsticks! Find out what works for you and make it a point to rock that sexy-ass look at once a week until you stop feeling weird. Keep in mind, in my book, there are three cardinal rules to wearing red lipstick flawlessly:
- A close-to-identical lip liner is a MUST. This is non-negotiable. Lip liner defines your lips to perfection, prolongs the life of the lip color and prevents it from feathering and spreading all over your face (think Ronald McDonald, not hot).
- You cannot, I repeat CANNOT, eat a cheeseburger, or a sandwich, or a hotdog, or a wrap or a giant turkey leg from the fair, or anything that requires you to open your mouth more than normal, while wearing red lipstick. Again, think of poor Ronald McDonald.
- Red lipstick cannot be an afterthought. It is as part of your look as your shoes or handbag. Red lipstick looks best with a flawless foundation/skin and minimal or very clean eye makeup. Stay away from bright, colorful eye shadows unless you’re going for the circus tent look. (See the clown trend here?)
