The human spirit tends to surprise me most during the holiday season. I have learned that the holiday season tends to push our souls a little further towards our skin, revealing a little more of who we really are. Our hopes, dreams and goals do the same by reminding us that yet another year has gone by. At this point, as we begin to set our resolutions for the new year ahead, we take detailed inventory of our lives and start adding and subtracting our accomplishments and failures. This is when I believe that the battle of the soul begins.
It is a battle between who you are, who you were and who you want to become. It’s that voice inside that whips you with regret for giving up on the goals that you didn’t see through during the year. Maybe life got in the way. Maybe, your motivation abandoned you during a time of crisis and you tossed your goal aside like an old doll. Maybe, you realized it was more work than you anticipated and giving up seemed like an easy way out at the moment. Maybe, you stopped believing in yourself and you’re not sure why. Perhaps you feel unworthy? Do you feel like you don’t have what it takes?
Then there’s that voice inside that dares you to believe again. It keeps you up at night and reminds you of the fire inside you. It tells you of stories of the person you could become, if you only worked a little harder. It paints pictures of how life would be if you could only summon the courage and the discipline to fight for your dreams and work on your goals. Perhaps it’s going back to school, or finally pursuing that job that you really want. Maybe it’s that dress in your closet that once made you feel like a million bucks and you no longer fit into. Or the guitar in the studio collecting dust, begging to be played again. Maybe, it’s that unfinished novel saved in your computer, or the picture of that far-away dream place you want to visit if you were only more disciplined with your money and squandered less of it on lattes, brunch and shoes.
Then comes the other voice and fills your head with excuses as to why these goals and dreams cannot be accomplished. It tells you that you’re too old, or too tired, or it’s too difficult. It tells you that you don’t have what it takes because otherwise, you would’ve accomplished it already. It reminds you of all the times you tried and failed and mocks your desire to believe in yourself. It reminds you of your insecurities, of your past, of your shortcomings and of all the obstacles between who you are and who you want to be.
It is up to us to choose which voice to entertain. It is up to us to starve our distractions and insecurities and feed our courage and our focus. In the battle of the soul, your soul, you need to decide on whose side you’re on because you have everything to gain, and even more to lose. So, whatever your battle is for 2016, I hope you win. I hope that you have the courage to believe in yourself once again and see your goals and resolutions to completion this year. More than hoping, I DARE YOU to believe in yourself this year because this life is too damn short to just watch the years go by and wonder what would be of your life if you had just believed in yourself.
Here’s to 2016 and to this new battle of the souls that begins with it; may the odds be ever in your favor.
