Remember Kim Kardashian’s floral dress on the red carpet of the 2013 Met Gala? The one resembling your grandmother’s sofa and matching curtains? That’s exactly what I thought when I first saw these high-waist, floral pants. I immediately dismissed them as tacky and continued selecting other articles of clothing to try on. Thanks to my good friend Carrie’s insistence, I ended up trying them on and to my surprise, I kinda’ liked them. They were different from all the other bottoms in my closet and their neutral tones made them easy to style so I just went with it. I’m so happy I kept them.
Onto the day these pictures were taken: It was amazing. We got a perfectly blue-skied, crisp fall day in Seattle. My brother and I ate lunch at Agua Verde Cafe, one of the city’s best traditional Mexican eateries located right behind the University of Washington (UW) and on the shore of Lake Union/Portage Bay. We sat outside on the sunny porch facing the lake and we both (actually it was just me) freaked out several times thanks to the honey bee that insisted on trying my deliciously sweet orchata. My brother devoured a burrito the size of a newborn human while I enjoyed some FIRE battered bacalao fish tacos with some killer avocado sauce (fried fish tacos are MY JAM).
We then waddled back to my brother’s research lab to wait for Nat Geo (yes, as in National Geographic) to the wire up my younger sibling’s egg-shaped head like a Christmas tree and film how this lab at the UW is now pioneering the transfer of information from one human brain directly to another (CRAZY SCIFI STUFF, I know). So while he’s getting a PhD and solving the most puzzling questions in cognitive neuroscience, I’m here playing with makeup and daydreaming about one day writing a novel (hey, one of us had to be born with the creative bug). I also wonder when we will finally be able to magically transfer food from one place to another. Think instant tiramisu (yaaass).
If you follow me on Snapchat (OwnYourGlam), you probably saw it all in action as well me doing my makeup thang and glamming up the Co-Director of the Cognition and Cortical Dynamics Laboratory for her close-up.
Tune into the National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo Mundo on Sunday, October 25 at 9 p.m. ET (6 p.m. PT). The show will be aired in 171 countries and 45 different languages, so this is kind of a big deal.
