Confession: I hated the whole Normcore trend. I mean, why would you NOT want to wear a gorgeous dress with some sexy heels to complement your flawless lipstick? Because sometimes you’re just not up for the effort, not to mention your feet need a break!
Like most women who work in a business setting, I’m in high heels ten to twelve hours a day. Combine that with some serious weight training at the gym and you have the perfect recipe for some of the worst pain imaginable: The foot/calf cramp. You know, the kind that makes your toes look like they’re possessed by the spirit of Chuckie? I mean full-blown exorcist style, straight out of a horror flick. Never happened to you?
Let me paint the picture for you –
I was driving home from Publix last Friday after an entire week in excruciatingly high heels. Obvi, I switched to flats at Publix because I’m not THAT much of a princess. As I approached a four-way stop sign blocks away from our Coral Gables apartment, my right foot went into freak-out mode. I managed to break with my left foot (the car violently coming to a halt, because who drives with their left foot!?) right in front of the stop sign and I proceeded to scream and cry and bang my head against the steering wheel while I grabbed my right foot and attempted to massage the plant of my foot which was frozen in a violent spasm that shot from my knee to the tip of my foot. My toes then began to act as if they had a mind of their own, curling on top of each other like little weird aliens! It gets better. In true Miami fashion, not a single car stopped to see if I was okay (assholes). I had the hazard blinkers on, my forehead against the steering wheel to hide the black tears streaking down my face while every single passing car (it was rush hour) honked repeatedly at me (ASSHOLES!). I sat there in agony for about fifteen minutes while I made deals with God (out loud by the way) and promised to take better care of my feet if he just let me get home safely. I had to call the fiancé to come and rescue me (in true princess-fashion after all) because the pain wasn’t letting up and I when it finally did, I was terrified of ramming my car into the wall in my parking garage should another foot-cramp attack.
Lesson of the day: Sneakers are your friends ladies and you will definitely be seeing me in more of them as I now coincidentally kinda’ love this newish Normcore trend that seems to be here to stay for the summer. I don’t think the boyfriend jeans will be growing on me though. We’ll see.
