We all own items that take us back us to very specific moments in our lives. It might be a pair of shoes that you gifted yourself to celebrate a promotion, or a pendant you acquired while discovering the hidden gems in an open market in a foreign country. Just looking at the item brings back the feeling of that era. If you close your eyes, you can place yourself in the very moment you first saw it.

I arrived to Madrid a week after graduating high school wearing my lavender Little Mermaid t-shirt, ripped jeans, a silver sequined belt and a straw cowgirl hat. I forget what shoes I was wearing. I vividly remember my dad’s reaction; he looked at me tenderly and chuckled. At the moment, I didn’t realize that I probably looked like a crazy kid but the truth is I’ve never cared. I’ve always worn what I wanted, even if it looks weird. This has made for years and years of jokes with my best friend who laughs shamelessly at some of my fashion choices. Looking back at some of these outfits, I can’t blame her.

I lived with my dad for six months before I started college in the spring at Florida International University. I was eighteen years old and the world was my oyster. Wide eyed and ready consume the world in one gulp, I had returned to my grandmother’s birth-land one decade and three countries later. The sense of freedom, familiarity and adventure was intoxicating.

One day, my dad I were walking the streets of Madrid when we encountered a hat store right in the Plaza Mayor. (I am a certified hat-freak). The options seemed never-ending. During that time, I was really into hats made of natural fibers (hence the straw cowgirl hat) when this safari-looking hat caught my eye. My dad bought it for me and I wore it for the rest of the day as he continued to show me around the city. It was so special to hear the city’s history narrated by my dad who is an avid reader and history buff. I had daydreamed of days when we could enjoy each other’s company like this. I had missed this man dearly since my parents’ divorce. We walked into a souvenir store in a touristy section of town and I bought the Spanish flag pin to decorate my new hat. I wanted to remember this day forever; the sweet summer heat, the chilled vino and the addicting larger-than-life feeling.

Looking at this hat takes me back to my eighteen year-old self, back to my time in Spain and back to my dad who still lives there and I miss dearly. Feelings of love and gratitude flood my body every single time.

About this outfit: This powder-blue dress was love at first sight at Forever 21. The lace neck and sleeves give it a dainty, retro feel and the gold buttons pop without being too distracting. It is the perfect wardrobe item that can tie spring into summer and summer into fall as it can be worn with sandals, booties, oxfords or a pair sexy high heels to give this sweet, little-girl dress a grown-up and edgy look.

These sweet leopard oxfords are on MAJOR SALE at Aldo right now! (here) They are soooo comfortable and fun that I find myself wearing them all the time! I completed this look with these mother of pearl, heart-shaped earrings for some added daintiness and a fringe purse (also from Aldo) for some texture contrast.

This lipstick is my new fave red lip which is “Cruella” by NARS.

Do you have any special hats in your closet? I would love to know the story behind them.

Stay fabulous!

Miami Fashion Bloggers Fall Plaid Dress Wynwood Model

Guess who’s ready for the fall season? THIS GAL right here.

The change of color in the trees, the cool, crisp temperatures, sipping hot cocoa by the fire, anticipating the first snow and the holidays, polishing my snow shovel. I’m totally kidding. This South Florida heat has officially melted my brain which resembles the inside of a glittery snow globe (that’s not entirely a bad thing, okay?). All joking aside, I cannot wait to bring out the tights, the vampy lip colors, wine-colored nails and  the leather. Can I get an Amen?

What’s new guys? I know its been a while (it feels like foh-evah!) since I last posted anything but I was in a pretty bad funk. Seriously. Not to blame anything but there were a series of events that really swept the rug from under my feet making me feel as if I landed on my head. The good news is that I am back and more driven and inspired than ever! I’ve been keeping busy writing as I enrolled in Tyler Knott Gregson’s “30 Days of Writing: Write Yourself Alive!” course which has been nothing short of life-changing. Anyone who aspires to be a serious writer or to simply become a better one should check out this brilliantly designed course. Word of caution – get ready to bleed.

Moving right along, the fiancé and I went to Sanibel about three weeks ago on a mini honeymoon and it is simply amazing what happens when you simply disconnect. It’s almost like an encounter with an old friend (yourself) when you can finally silence the noise of your busy life and you can clearly hear your own thoughts and desires. During this much-needed master reset, I realized that Own Your Glam turned one this August!

It feels like only yesterday when I took this giant leap of faith and opened up my life, my thoughts and my world to the blogging-sphere. My life has changed so much! I’ve met and connected with some incredibly talented and creative individuals and I have made some new friends along the way that pushed me and inspired me to get out of this first real blogging funk.

I have come to fiercely love who I have become and this blog has given me the opportunity to share with the world who I am. This little space on the web has given me the courage to write about my thoughts (both publicly and privately), my passions, some of my struggles and my joys and ultimately, it has become the vessel that my thoughts needed to finally materialize and become something other than puffy clouds inside my head.

I realize that the content on Own Your Glam has varied greatly since its inception. I used to focus more on beauty and makeup, makeup tutorials on YouTube, and product reviews. I will continue doing this while also focusing on self-improvement topics (a.k.a. heart to hearts), lifestyle posts and creative writing pieces. Who knows, maybe I’ll grow the courage to share my poetry with you one day (yikes). Until then, I promise, to you and to myself, to continue writing candidly and from the heart and to give you some food for thought. I promise to share more than just pretty pictures and advice on clothing and products. In a world of perfectly curated online profiles, I vow to remain real. Genuine. Human.

Happy Birthday, Own Your Glam! Thank you for giving me the courage to finally follow my heart, to write without apologies, and to finally be myself.

On a lighter note, I wore this asymmetrical blue plaid dress to a fabulous bloggers’ brunch hosted by The Fashionable Esquire, celebrating the re-launch of Earl Jeans, and it was a complete hit! I paired it with some vintage Stuart Weitzman leather booties (similar here) and my grandmother’s vintage red wool hat for some added pop. This look has me feeling all sorts of fall vibes, hence the hot cocoa daydreams. The good thing about living in Miami is that we don’t need a snow shovel and THAT is something to be truly grateful for.

Stay fabulous!
