True story: I was a slave to Keratin hair treatments for the past six years. I would religiously get it done every four months and while I would end up feeling sick after each application (sore throat, irritated eyes, headache), I absolutely loved the results. Frizzy, unmanageable hair was a thing of the past and good hair days were every single day. This was the only way I was able to manage my waist-long hair. I knew I was being exposed to large amounts of formaldehyde which is the main active ingredient in the keratin that leaves curly hair like mine, pin-straight. It’s embarrassing to publicly admit that I didn’t care.
Then one day last year, we had a pregnancy scare and I was miserable thinking that I could have potentially exposed my baby to all those chemicals the week before. That was the wake-up call. Nothing (not even perfect hair) is worth jeopardizing your health and the health of your family. I’ve slowly been transitioning to using cosmetics and cleaning products that are better for my health and for the environment. I think a lot about long-term effects and sustainability these days. I guess it’s part of growing up and thinking about your unborn children on a regular basis.
Since then, I’ve been blow-drying my hair old-school style, with the blow-drier and lots of patience. The whole ordeal takes about ninety minutes, which I dread. On several occasions, I tried letting my hair do its thing and air-dry into its natural state but instead of the soft, bouncy curls that I once had, my hair resembled partially chewed and spit-out hay. It was so not cute.
I did my homework on how to prep and care for curly hair. I purchased several different curl creams and mousses that promised “natural bounce” without success. I was about to give up on my hair when the peeps at ProjectBeauty reached out to me and asked me to review their hair masque. The name of the product, HAIRGURT, instantly caught my attention and upon further investigation, I was all in. Talk about the universe manifesting itself, huh?
It turns out my hair was desperately dehydrated from months of heat styling and flat-iron abuse. Real yogurt protein, quinoa, six different botanical oils was all my hair needed to come back from the dead. I haven’t seen my hair like this since I was in high school! A huge plus with this brand is that, in their own words, they keep the “ugly stuff “out: Free of sulfates, parabens, harsh salt systems, harmful colors and harmful fragrances, this line fits right into my new “cleaner and more natural” cosmetics lifestyle. ProjectBeauty also has a line of shampoos, body lotions/scrubs/sprays, and they have a skincare line coming out soon! (I can’t wait to review it!)
If you follow me on Snapchat (OwnYourGlam), you probably caught the live, fresh out-of-the-shower review of the Coconut Aćai Curl Perfecting Yogurt Hair Masque. I receive A TON of products to review on a regular basis and while only the Own Your Glam approved ones make it to the blog, I talk about other products that I like and dislike on the snap.
I see myself indulging in HAIRGURT’s Strawberry Banana Hair Masque in the near future and you know I’ll be all over my Snapchat raving about it. If your hair needs some TLC, make sure to check out ProjectBeauty at www.MyProjectBeauty.com
